Stay at Home book tag!

Thanks to Delly for tagging me in this fun little Q&A tag, and click on the name to go through to see her answers!

1. Laying in bed — A book you read in one day

I actually read a lot of books in one day, and a surprising amount in one sitting, but GOOD GIRL, BAD BLOOD by Holly Jackson stands out as one that I actually could not put down. We had stay-at-home plans to finish a TV show the evening it was delivered, and I had to guiltily tell my housemate there was no way I could stop reading it long enough to put the telly on.

2. Snacking – A book that is a ‘guilty pleasure’ read

I’m sure this will surprise exactly nobody but GIDEON THE NINTH is my ‘guilty pleasure’ read. I don’t actually believe in ‘guilty pleasures’ (don’t feel guilty for things that make you happy) but if I had to pick one that I go back to again and again to feel happy, it’s GIDEON THE NINTH. I’ve read it three times so far, and I’ll read it a dozen more times too, I’m sure.

3. Netflix — A series that you want to start

I’ve heard so much amazing stuff about V E Schwab, and so much about A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC and I finally have all three of them on my shelves. I can’t wait to jump into them. I’m usually a bit leery of series’, preferring standalones, but this one has really caught my eye.

4. Deep clean — A book that has been on your TBR for ages

Kim Newman’d THE HOUND OF THE D’URBERVILLES has been on my shelves for…. ever. It has to be at least seven or eight years, since the height of my Tumblr and Moriarty obsession (not that I’m less obsessed with Jim Moriarty and Sebastian Moran now) and somehow I’ve just never finished it. I’ve read a few passages from it so often I know them off by heart, but the actual whole book? Evaded me. I’m going to get to it soon, I swear.

5. Animal Crossing — A book you recently bought because of the hype

I have heard nothing but good things about STEEL CROW SAGA by Paul Kreuger, and I was already desperate to read it. Then someone described it as Pokemon meets Avatar and I ordered it for my birthday immediately. It’s on my TBR for the #ogreadathon in June (Team Artemis represent!) and I can’t wait to dive into it.

6. Productivity — A book you learned from or had an impact on you

Linsey Miller’s BELLE RÉVOLTE felt personal to me. I don’t know if it’ll be impactful for everyone, but I read it at a time where I was recovering from a messy break up that came from me realising (finally) that I’m aromantic. There’s an asexual character in BELLE, and while it’s not remotely the same, the way that the character described her asexuality and how she felt about it hit me like a sucker punch. This book gave me the words to describe my own sexuality positively and comfortably, and I will never not love it for that. My copy is handpainted and personalised by Linsey Miller and is easily one of my most prized books.

7. FaceTime — A book you were gifted

MATRIARCH by Adam Wing was bought for me off my Amazon wishlist, and it’s such an incredible read that I ended up buying it for three more people. It’s a brilliant, fascinating story that I’m grateful to have been bought.

8. Self-care — What is one thing you have done recently to look after yourself

When I first went on furlough, I thought ‘oh shit, a chance to do my blogging full time’. And then I felt tired at the thought. So instead, I took a blogging break. I didn’t give myself a deadline to come back, just decided I would read what I wanted until I felt like writing reviews again. After around two weeks, I was excited to get back into blogging and I’ve felt rejuvenated since I started writing posts again. I picked the books I wanted to review from my break and now have content scheduled as far as August and I’ve taken the pressure off and given myself permission to love my hobby again.

BONUS — An upcoming release you are looking forward to

The cover, the title, the comps, the description. I can’t wait to get my hands on this book, and it feels like it’s taking too damn long to get here! I’ve been on a real YA thriller/mystery kick lately and with all the hype I’ve heard for this one, I can’t wait to pick it up.

  1. Your description of the Steel Crow Saga sounds fantastic! I haven’t heard much about it but now need to check it out. Yay I need to read the ADSOM series too. I also now realise I should have answered that question with a book series and that I’m a numpty 😂 Thanks for completing the tag!
